Keynote Speakers

Emily Drabinksi

LKSW 2023 is thrilled to welcome Emily Drabinski, incoming president of the American Library Association, as one of our keynote speakers. Emily is a Critical Pedagogy Librarian at the Mina Rees Library at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. She has worked in libraries for more than twenty years in positions ranging from looseleaf legal filer to library director. She believes in building worker power as a means of transforming our workplaces, communities, and ourselves. Emily will be delivering two talks while she is in Singapore:

Wednesday, 15 February: Working Knowledge: Libraries and the Ways We Learn

This talk will be open to the public and will feature a discussion of what a library is and how it contributes to student learning. Details about exact timings and location will be confirmed closer to the date.

Friday, 17 February: Save the Library, Save the World

This talk will be the opening keynote speech for LKSW 2023. It will be a discussion of the ways we are crucial to our communities.

Sonny Liew

Sonny Liew’s The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye was a New York Times and Amazon bestseller, and the first graphic novel to win the Singapore Literature Prize. Other works include The Shadow Hero (with Gene Luen Yang), Doctor Fate (with Paul Levitz) and Malinky Robot, as well as titles for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, DC Vertigo, First Second Books, Boom Studios, Disney Press and Image Comics. He has been nominated for multiple Eisner Awards for his writing and art (including 6 for The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye)  and for spearheading Liquid City, a multivolume comics anthology featuring creators from Southeast Asia. Sonny will deliver the Saturday morning keynote address at LKSW. Copies of his books will also be available at the LKSW Book Fair on Friday.

Saturday, 18 February: The Language of Comics

Sonny will speak about the language of comics and unique features of the comic medium. He will also speak about his experiences “semi-surviving” the publishing industry as a cartoonist and graphic novelist.
